Ground-measured albedo data for New Zealand snow including Australian dust and algae

An ASD Fieldspec 4 Hi-Res spectroradiometer was used to collect spectra from snow in Aotearoa New Zealand. The data are grouped into three different instances. 1. Tasman 1 - these data were collected from Tasman Saddle in February 2022. They represent an experiment in which Australian dust (collected from New Zealand glacier accumulation areas in February 2020, following a severe bushfire season in Australia) was applied to plots on snow, and the effect on albedo calculated. 2. Canyon Creek - these data were collected from snow on the surface of an alpine lake in the Canyon Creek catchment in December 2022. They represent experiments in which snow algae (previously collected from the site and freeze dried) were added to clean snow to create a standard curve for albedo, associated albedo study of natural populations on the surface of the lake, and experimental additions of Australian dust to these populations in order to test whether the effect of both on albedo was additive. 3. Tasman 2 - these data were collected from the Tasman Saddle site in November 2023 to develop corrections for equipment used in the earlier experiments that affected reflectance. Detailed descriptions of methodology can be found in the file set. We gratefully acknowledge support from the New Zealand Marsden Fund, contract MFP-LCR2003.
