Data corresponds to hemispherical photos of the forest canopy processed with the GLA/C 2.0 software (Frazer et al 1999). Hemiphotos were taken between 24/7/07 and 29/7/07, in areas where single species made up significant proportions of the canopy. Photos were taken at 135 cm from the ground and oriented to the magnetic North. Drawings were made of crown to assist species identification when analysed.
The GLA 'registration tool' was used to analyse individual circular sections of the canopy.
- Areas were only sampled where canopy consisted of a single species.
- Large canopy gaps and trunks were avoided, although smaller areas were unavoidable and to some degree typical of the structure of the crowns of certain species.
- Areas were analysed down to 60 degrees from the zenith (ie, areas towards the horizon were avoided).
- 'Registration size' was typically between 100-130 radius, although where practical some area sizes were outside this range.
