Advice on design and methods for monitoring common and widespread terrestrial bird species in the Otago region

Otago Regional Council (ORC) contracted the Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI) to provide advice on a suitable sampling design and monitoring methods to assess the state and trends of common and widespread terrestrial bird species across Otago.

This report provides a review of existing information to answer the following questions: • What are the general considerations for monitoring the state and trends of common and widespread terrestrial birds? Specifically, what would different options deliver for Otago? • Given these considerations, what would be the most suitable monitoring design? • What investment would be required for options of such a monitoring design?
