All modern Floras build on the botanical groundwork that has preceded them, and the Flora of New Zealand – Ferns and Lycophytes is no different. We have stood on the shoulders of earlier authors and, aided by more extensive field work and modern technological developments, we have been able to see further and more clearly than they were able to do. There have been many Floras and other publications documenting New Zealand ferns and lycophytes since Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander began the process over 250 years ago. It is appropriate, therefore, to begin by acknowledging the work of our predecessors.
