Metadata description for Velazquez et al. submitted This text file describes the data used in a paper titled "Causes of multimodal size distributions in spatially-structured populations" currently in review for the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society -B. The four authors on this paper are Jorge Velazquez, Robert B. Allen, David A. Coomes and Markus P. Eichhorn. The data is stored in Landcare Research's DataStore and linked to the New Zealand National Vegetation Survey Databank (https://nvs.landcareresearch.co.nz/Data/Search). The data available on DataStore (http://dx.doi.org/10.7931/V1MW2Z) is licenced CC-BY 4.0. The data is stored in a Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values File called "Velazquez et al PRSB data.csv". The data in the Excel spreadsheet is held in five columns: #plot which is the plot identifier number and numbered from 1 to 250 Tag which is a 4 digit individual tree tag number unique to a plot D.1974 diameter in mm measured in 1974 D.1984 diameter in mm measured in 1984 D.1993 diameter in mm measured in 1993 Where a tree has a missing value to the left shows that it was recruited during the study. Where a tree has an NA value to the right shows that they died during the study. As the National Vegetation Survey Databank is a live repository a current version of the data can be constructed from the following files: HARPER/AVOCA FOREST 1974-1975 Stem diameter HARPER/AVOCA FOREST 1983-1984 Stem diameter HARPER/AVOCA FOREST 1993-1994 Stem diameter Only trees with a diameter >= 30 mm were included in the data analysed by Velazquez et al. The field methods used to collect this data are comprehensively described in: Hurst, J.M.; Allen, R.B. 2007. A permanent plot method for monitoring indigenous forests - field protocols.
