Metadata for 'naturalseedling_alluvial&marine_growth_mort_fenced&unfenced.csv' Data from naturally established tree seedlings sampled from fenced and unfenced areas within alluvial and marine terraces at Waitutu Forest, New Zealand. Seedlings were first sampled in January-April 2002 by Dr D. Wilson and re-surveyed in July 2007 by Chris Morse, Dr. Peter Bellingham and Dr. Sarah Richardson. For additional information contact Dr. Deborah Wilson (WilsonD@landcareresearch.co.nz). Column header abbreviations and data codes are as follows: 'terrace': either 'ALLUVIAL' OR 'MARINE' 'site': site location and treatment. Sites were East Crombie Alluvial ('ECA'), Slaughter Burn Alluvial ('SBA'), West Waitutu Alluvial ('WWA'), East Crombie Medium ('ECM'), East Waitutu Medium ('EWM'), West Crombie Medium ('WCM'). Treatments were either unfenced ('CTRL') or fenced ('EXCL'). 'tag': seedling tag number. 'species': species code; described in Table B1 of Appendix B (Forsyth et al. 2015). 'H02_cm': stretched seedling height (in cm), measured between a painted mark at 5 cm height and the apical bud in January-April 2002. 'H07_cm': stretched seedling height (in cm), measured between a painted mark at 5 cm height and the apical bud in July 2007. 'condition07': condition in 2007 when 'H07_cm' is not available; either 'dead' or 'not found'. 'gla': light intensities as the percentage of above-canopy light that reaches each quadrat. Estimates based on hemispherical canopy photos taken above each seedling and processed with the GLA/C 2.0 software (Frazer et al. 1999). 'notes02': notes recorded by observer in 2002. 'notes07': notes recorded by observer in 2007. 'substrate': substrate on which the seedling was growing, with categories as follows: 'BR' Bryophytes (moss/liverwort) 'CFT' Crown fern trunk 'D' "Dead wood (bark, branches, logs without moss, dead tree or fern trunks)" 'EP' Epiphytic (in some cases recorded in notes) 'LIT' Litter 'LOG' Log (not mossy) 'MDL' Mound that is clearly a soft decomposed mossy log 'MDO' Mound of other organic debris 'MDP' Mound of accumulated debris at base of podocarp tree 'ML' Mossy log or root (hard) 'S' Soil 'TB' "Treebase (growing on the base of a tree, not a mound)" 'TF' Tree-fern base (Note: Mounds and Mossy logs must be at least 15 cm high) Frazer, G.W., Canham, C. & Lertzman, K.P. (1999) Gap Light Analyzer (GLA), Version 2.0: Imaging software to extract canopy structure and gap light transmission indices from true-colour fisheye photographs, users manual and program documentation.
